CASE SUMMARY

In 2019, the Toronto Raptors made it to the NBA Finals for the first time in history, thanks in no small part to player Kawhi Leonard, who was in the final year of his contract. To help convince Leonard to re-sign with the team, sports website Raptors Republic launched “Ka’wine and Dine.” The initiative, devised by Rethink, saw restaurants place a badge in their windows pledging to give the player free food for life should he decide to stick with the team. Propelled early on by the media’s interest, the initiative soon expanded to non-restaurant businesses, including law firms and Uber drivers and a major CPG company. The campaign organically reached 70 million social accounts and was reported in the media for 54 consecutive days.
